Consists of 18 folders. All but one of the letters are to Rev. W. H. Furness. The letter dated 10 June 1846 is accompanied by an autograph copy of Emerson's poem "The World-Soul." The collection also includes a copy of the poem "Warning" by William Ellery Channing, written out by Emerson, and a ms. in Emerson's hand of the poems "Loss and Gain" ("Virtue runs before the muse ...") and "A Fable" ("The mountain and the squirrel had a quarrel ...").

William Henry Furness, Unitarian minister, was born 20 Apr. 1802 in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1825 Furness was ordained minister of the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia.
